Our hybrid campus clinical medical assistant program provides a flexible and convenient learning experience. You can take classes at our Richmond, VA campus and also study online from the comfort of your home anywhere, allowing you to balance your education with other commitments. Our program is specifically designed to prepare you for real-world scenarios, ensuring that you gain practical skills that are directly applicable in a medical office setting.
What are you going to learn?
- Clinical Procedures and Patient Care: CMAs are trained in a variety of clinical procedures, from taking vital signs (like blood pressure, temperature, and pulse) to assisting with minor surgeries. They'll learn how to prepare patients for examinations, collect and prepare laboratory specimens, and perform basic laboratory tests. Additionally, they'll be trained in techniques like phlebotomy, administering medications, and giving injections.
- Medical Terminology and Anatomy: A foundational understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology is essential for CMAs. This knowledge ensures they can effectively communicate with other healthcare professionals, understand medical records, and provide appropriate care based on a patient's condition and the physician's instructions.
- Infection Control and Safety Protocols: Patient safety is paramount. CMAs will learn about sterilization techniques, proper disposal of contaminated supplies, and the importance of maintaining a clean and safe clinical environment. They'll also be trained in the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and the protocols to follow to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
- Patient Communication and Education: Building a rapport with patients and ensuring they understand their medical conditions and treatments is a vital aspect of a CMA's role. Students will learn effective communication skills, how to obtain medical histories, and how to educate patients about medications, dietary restrictions, and post-visit care instructions.
