ExCPT vs PTCE: compare the two national pharmacy technician exams, from eligibility and format to renewal, so you can choose the right test for your goals.

If you are training to become a pharmacy technician, you will hear two exam names again and again: the ExCPT and the PTCE. Both lead to a national pharmacy technician certification, and both are respected by employers. The short answer to "which one should I take?" is this: choose the exam your state, your future employer and your training path line up with best. The rest of this guide walks you through the real differences so you can make that choice with confidence.
The ExCPT (Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians) is offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Passing it earns you the CPhT credential through NHA.
The PTCE (Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam) is offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Passing it earns you the CPhT credential through PTCB.
Both exams test the knowledge you need to work safely beside a pharmacist: medications, pharmacy law and regulations, patient safety, prescription processing and pharmacy math. The topics overlap a lot. The biggest differences are in eligibility rules, test format and where you can sit for the exam.
This is often the deciding factor, so read it carefully and always confirm on the certifying body's website before you apply.
According to NHA, candidates need a high school diploma or GED/high school equivalency plus one of the following:
PTCB lists two pathways:
If you are finishing a training program, check whether that program qualifies for the pathway you want. Your program advisor can tell you which exam the curriculum is built around.
Here is how the two exams compare based on each organization's current certification pages:
Format matters more than people expect. If you test best in a familiar setting, remote proctoring may appeal to you. If you would rather leave home and focus in a formal testing room, a test center might suit you better.
Neither credential is "one and done." Both must be renewed every two years.
Build CE into your routine early. Many technicians knock out a few hours each quarter instead of scrambling before the deadline.
Use these four questions to narrow it down:
Because the content overlaps, the same study habits pay off no matter which test you choose:

The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook notes that some states and employers require pharmacy technicians to be certified, and that even where it is not required, certification may make it easier to get a job. The Handbook reports a median annual wage of $45,750 for pharmacy technicians in May 2025 and projects employment to grow 6 percent from 2025 to 2035, with about 44,700 openings each year on average (source: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Pharmacy Technicians). Actual pay varies by location and employer.
Neither is "easy." Both cover similar core knowledge. Pick the one that matches your state, employer and eligibility, then prepare thoroughly.
NHA offers live remote proctoring as well as PSI testing centers. Check NHA's site for current technology requirements before you schedule.
It depends on the employer and the state. Many job postings ask for national certification without naming one. Check postings and your state board of pharmacy.
Yes. Both NHA and PTCB require renewal every two years with continuing education.
