What are the CE requirements for pharmacy technicians in Virginia?

In Virginia, pharmacy technicians who are registered must obtain a minimum of 5 hours of approved continuing education (CE) every calendar year.

National Board Certification renewal: Pharmacy technicians must renew their certification every 2 years.

  1. CE requirements: To renew their board certification, pharmacy technicians must complete a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education (CE) during the 2-year certification period.
  2. Approved CE programs: CE credits must be earned through programs that are approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
  3. CE topics: At least 5 of the 20 required CE hours must be in pharmacy law and regulations, medication safety, or other topics specified by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy.
  4. Documentation: Pharmacy technicians must maintain documentation of their completed CE hours and provide it to the Virginia Board of Pharmacy upon request.

It is important to verify this information with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy, as rules and regulations may have changed since my last knowledge update. You can visit their website (https://www.dhp.virginia.gov/pharmacy/) or contact them directly for the most current information.
